“Autistic and damn proud of it.” – Lola Ruth Campbell

Lola Ruth Campbell is a 32 year-old woman with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) residing in Denton, Texas. She uses painting to express her thoughts and feelings on experiences growing up as a child that was “different” from the rest.

Lola was diagnosed with autism in 2008, at 26 years of age. She did not benefit from the kind of early childhood supports found at Open Door Preschools. Research has shown that awareness, acceptance and appropriate interventions help children learn the skills they need to communicate, engage in social interactions and manage their behavior; which builds a foundation for them to reach their incredible potential.

This painting was commissioned and donated by Autism Comprehensive Educational Services, Inc. (dba ACES) to Open Door Preschools in honor of the 39 years their doors have been open to helping Austin families and their children with autism and other special needs.

“I may not look you in the eye
but I can look at you in the heart.” – Lola Ruth Campbell
