There are thousands of career fields you can enter, most of which make an impact in some way on others. A behavioral interventionist (BI) is a career that makes an impact on individuals and families who have been impacted by autism and other special needs. BIs love to help primarily children lead full lives by giving them the skills they need, from social skills to behavior tools. By helping children on the autism spectrum, they are changing lives every day.ACES ABA is an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for autistic children through our professional services, which include ABA therapy, PECS, occupational therapy, speech therapy, Social Skills Training, and more. Benefits of a Behavioral Interventionist Career

Job Security

According to the latest statistics released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), autism is up nearly 10% in two years, or affecting nearly 1 in 54 children in the United States. About 1 in 6 children ages 3-17 were diagnosed with some sort of developmental disability in a study from 2009-2017.With the cases of autism growing, there is an ever-present need for qualified behavior therapists for children on the autism spectrum to receive services. Currently, there's not enough ABA or qualified therapists right now, and the need will only continue to grow. If you have a heart for children, BIs can expect to face a robust job market for many, many years. In addition, there is a need for behavior interventionists and ABA therapists nationwide, so you will be able to choose where you want to live and grow your career.

Making a Difference in People's Lives

In some careers, it can be hard to see a real difference in people's lives. In today's world, with more people working remotely, there can be an even bigger disconnect here as well. However, when you are working with children, most people report a very high job satisfaction rate, and they feel like they are making a difference in others' lives. Working with children on the autism spectrum can be extremely rewarding. You get to see real progress being made in the lives of both the child and their families. You have the opportunity to provide a child with life skills that will help them throughout their lives. You can impact a child's quality of life dramatically, which in itself is extremely rewarding. Like any career, there are ups and downs, but there are more up days than down days with behavior interventionists. ACES is looking for BIs at our locations. Visit our site to learn more.

No Set Path for Education for a Behavior Interventionist

Becoming a behavior interventionist is different for everyone. Some start with a degree in education, social work, or psychology. There are trainee programs where you can enter with just a high school degree as you are able to gain hands-on experience while continuing your education. There are various certifications you can earn, such as with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The most important thing to have as a BI is a heart for children. Communication skills are a close second since you must be able to communicate to parents and others your patients' individualized learning program and autism treatment course. Having an analytical mindset helps since you will be analyzing how your patient is performing under your autism treatment course.

You Will Learn and Grow, Too

As anyone with children or who works with children will tell you, you will learn just as much, if not more, from them. Children have a perspective most adults have lost from our life experiences. Sometimes, adults have to grow up before their time if they had a rough childhood. Being around children allows you to see with their eyes again. You will get to experience life from their perspective, and in the process, learn about life and yourself from them. Being a behavior interventionist will challenge you in new ways, as you'll be challenged about your beliefs about the world around you as well.
