A Smooth, Organized Morning Can Set the Tone for the Day. Here Are Some Tips to Help You Organize Your Family's Mornings

Mornings can be challenging for everyone, but now is the perfect time to establish new routines to start the day smoothly. Here are some tips for creating less stressful mornings for families with autism:

Establish a Routine

Consistency is critical for individuals with autism, so establish a set morning routine and stick to it as closely as possible. Clear expectations and structure help children with autism feel more secure and in control.

Prep the Night Before

Have everything ready for the morning. Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and prepare breakfast to reduce last-minute stress.

Use Visual Aids

Create a visual schedule of the morning routine to help your child understand what is expected of them. Social stories are also a great way to introduce routines.

Involve All the Family

Everyone - not just the child with autism-should know what's expected of them.

Give Extra Time

Allowing ample time for getting dressed and having breakfast can reduce stress and help prevent rushing.

Be Patient

Rome wasn't built in a day, and new habits take a couple of weeks to stick. If things go astray one day, go back to the plan as soon as possible instead of beating yourself up.

Minimize Sensory Overload

Try to minimize sensory overload by reducing loud noises, bright lights, and overwhelming smells during the morning.

Be Proactive

If a particular task or situation causes stress, try to address it proactively and find ways to make it more manageable. Your ABA interventionist may offer valuable tips on handling specific situations.

Remember that encouragement and a positive attitude can go a long way in reducing stress for everyone involved. By implementing these tips, families with autism can create a less stressful and more manageable morning routine.
