Keeping Siblings and Their Possessions Safe

Many children with ASD engage in verbal and physical behaviors that may be upsetting to others as they attempt to communicate and navigate their world. Siblings are most often in the path of these behaviors along with the things they value. Creating safety around the most vulnerable family members becomes a priority for parents who know that addressing this need also protects the future health of the siblings’ relationship long-term.

What Can You Do with Siblings This Month?

  1. Let your child know you want to create a safe zone for when their sibling is engaging in difficult behaviors. Ask for ideas about what they need most from you and what situations are hardest for them, then take action with the help of the professionals who support your family.
  2. Create a “feel good box” for your child’s safe zone containing items to help distract and soothe them when their sibling is engaging in upsetting behaviors. A trip to the dollar store can provide many great options.

The Power of Parents

Parents cannot predict and buffer all unsettling situations siblings may face, but siblings do recognize when their parents make their need for safety a priority and will feel reassured that they are not needing to handle difficult situations alone.
