Adaptive and Cognitive Milestones

During this stage, babies may enjoy shaking, banging, or throwing toys and can take things out of containers. They can follow simple directions like "pick up the toy" and look at the correct picture when it's named. Babies also develop more complex problem-solving skills; they can find hidden things easily and start using items correctly, such as drinking from a cup.

Movement Milestones

At ten to twelve months, babies typically become more confident and independent in their movement. Many babies can get to a sitting position without help, cruise while holding onto furniture, and even take their first steps. They may also become more skilled at crawling upstairs and even attempt to climb and stand alone.

Social and Emotional Milestones

One-year-olds are social and may enjoy playing with other children or imitating adult behavior. They may be shy or nervous with strangers and cry when a parent leaves. They develop more preferences for people and things and can express these opinions, such as handing a parent a specific book when they want to hear a story.

Communication Milestones

Babies at this age typically begin to use their first words like "mama" and "dada" and exclamations like "uh-oh!" They may also start to understand simple requests, such as "Come here." At this age, babies can use nonverbal communication methods, such as pointing or making gestures, to express their needs and wants. Imitation is expected at this stage as babies learn to speak with more inflections.While every baby develops at their own pace, understanding these key milestones can provide parents with a sense of what to expect and can help identify any potential developmental concerns.
