Three Tips to Find a School for Your Child with Autism
Review All Your Choices
You can think of looking for a school for your child on the spectrum as shopping for any other consumer good, if you are in an area where you have choices. You'll want to visit the potential schools on your list ahead of time, talk to the teachers, principal, counselors, and specialists, and observe classes. Look for things such as a sensory room where children can go to decompress, or a learning center that would serve the same function. Consider if the school is nearby or far away, since some children with autism have a hard time on buses. You can choose to visit the school alone or bring your child along to see their reaction.
Accept the Fact That School Will Be Different for Your Child
Most of us have an idea of what school will be like and/or what it should be like. This idea stems from when we were in school. However, school looks different than it did 15 years ago from your time there, and if you have a child on the spectrum, it will look different from all the other children. Plus, every child with autism is unique in what will work for them. Some children thrive in a mainstream school; whereas, others flounder, and do better in an adapted school environment. Also, it may take some trial and error (i.e. you may have to try a few schools) before you find the right one for your child. ACES recommends that you let go of trying to make the school what you think it should be for your child and just accept that what will be, will be.
Ask a Lot of Questions
You'll need to know all of the facts about the school in order to make an informed decision. The more preliminary research you do about the schools you are considering online ahead of time can help to eliminate questions and help you form new ones that are important to you. You'll want to ask about their services for children with autism, their teaching methods, if they will allow an ABA therapist or other therapist to accompany your child at times, and what their classroom behavior management plans look like. The more information you know, the better informed your decision will be, and the less likely you'll make the wrong one and have to move your child.
