TABLA DE CONTENIDO

Most parents of children with autism receive the diagnosis with a mix of shock and disbelief. Thoughts of denial, such as "it can be true," "this doctor doesn't know anything," and even "it is probably ADHD, or something else, but not autism," pop up.

Breath.

You've got this. You will educate yourself. Your life will be different than you imagined. But there will be joy and laughter and hope and victories to celebrate.

And then... Act.

Look for support. Learn the ropes. Become an advocate for your child and your family.

Again, you've got this.

Of course, there will be many stages between "breath" and "act." You will probably feel grief and anger. You will bargain - let it be something else! And you will experience denial.

Why Do We Experience Denial?

Denial plays an important psychological role. It is a mechanism that buffers intense emotions, such as fear, sadness, and anger. It allows us time to process information and feelings and grow stronger until we can deal with them.

These are common thoughts of denial of an autism diagnosis:

  • We are scared
  • There will be no future
  • He'll grow out of it
  • What did I do wrong?
  • We can't afford this
  • I can't handle this
  • This is just a phase
  • This isn't what I planned
  • There isn't anyone with autism in my family
  • I don't have time
  • Other people will judge or stare at my child

The Upside of Acceptance

Once a parent comes to terms with the diagnosis, the entire family benefits:

You'll become your child's advocate

The sooner you come to terms with the diagnosis, the sooner you can find programs to support the child's development like ABA therapy or other autism therapy options.

You won't wait

You will now be able to transmit confidence to the rest of the family, explain autism, and reassure siblings that you are still there for them.

You will develop a new sensitivity

You'll choose your battles

It's not worth it to expend energy on judgmental people of your parenting or your child. They are the uneducated ones, not you.

You'll learn that you are not alone

Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) can feel isolating. But if you look, you will find a community of people who have lived through the same struggles and are willing to help.
