Fostering a strong bond between siblings is probably one of the greatest goals of every parent. But even in the most ideal situations, managing the relationship between siblings can be tricky. The following tips may help.

Sibling relationships come with challenges for all families. Parents with neuro-divergent and neuro-typical children often feel the strain between both worlds and the need to integrate them.

• Explain to your neuro-typical child what autism is and how it affects people. This way, they can better understand their sibling with autism. By teaching your child how autism affects their sibling, they can better relate, empathize, and appreciate their sibling as a whole person.
• The neurotypical siblings may sometimes feel they need to compete for attention. Make sure your neurotypical child feels appreciated and encourage their individuality.
• It's also helpful to find common activities both children enjoy doing together.

Having two children with autism creates a unique set of dynamics that some parents may be unsure of how to approach:

• Find activities that both children enjoy and in which they can both partake. For non-verbal children, this can be particularly helpful in building relationships.
• Look for inclusive family programming. The programming may include communal and individual activities.
• Creating family rules is an excellent way to set a standard for both children. This encourages behaviors that are positive and can be rewarded. It is also a great way to help siblings collaborate if they can work towards a collective goal.
