A Simple Roadmap to Get ABA Services for Your Child Through TriCare or Humana

Being a military parent has many challenges, getting services for your child with autism shouldn't be one. Even in the best of circumstances, navigating the world of referrals, tests and appointments can be frustrating.

Here, we provide you with a roadmap to get your child the ABA care they need, while minimizing the hassle.

Requirements

  1. Diagnosis for Autism, including the DSM V Checklist. The checklist is usually filled out by a Primary Care Manager (PCM) or an ADS- Diagnosing Specialist. Civilian providers, military hospitals, and clinics can submit the checklist.
  2. A Referral for ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). Both the Primary Care Manager (PCM) or an ADS- Diagnosing Specialist can request a referral for your child.

Diagnosis

Parents from all walks of life share the question: Who can diagnose my child with autism? Is it a pre-school teacher, their pediatrician, or a specialist?

Your Primary Care Manager (PCM) or an ASD-Diagnosis Specialist can diagnose the child with autism. Primary Care Managers include pediatricians, PNPs, and Family Medicine Doctors. ASD-Diagnosing Specialist come from more speciali zed fields of pediatrics, psychologists and certain DNPs.

  • Pediatricians
  • Pediatric family medicine physicians
  • Pediatric nurse practitioners
ASD-Diagnosing Specialists
  • Physicians board-certified or board-eligible in:
    • developmental-behavioral pediatrics
    • neurodevelopmental pediatrics
    • child neurology
    • child psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Board-certified Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNPs) who meet criteria

My child has a diagnosis, a referral for ABA and the DSM V Checklist has been submitted, now what?

  1. ACES can help! Fill out the start services form.
  2. We will work with you and your insurance to get an assessment authorization!

Though the paperwork and motions can seem like a lot, remember that generally, the earlier a child with autism receives therapy, the better the outcome. It is also important to keep the care as consistent as possible, even when your family moves across state lines.

Through this process, TRICARE and Humana will support families through the pre-enrollment process for 180 days, which includes enrolling in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) and ECHO enrollment.
