ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy is a comprehensive form of behavioral intervention that uses psychology principles to analyze how behaviors are shaped by their environment.
ABA professionals focus on teaching new skills and modifying existing ones to improve quality of life.

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA therapy breaks down complex tasks into small, manageable skills taught step-by-step. First, specialists will assess the child's skills and then develop a treatment plan that targets the specific areas of need. Each task is designed to be achievable for the child, and therapists use positive reinforcement to strengthen the skills being learned.

The goal of ABA therapy is to help children become more independent and to support them in their own goals within meaningful routines or relationships in their lives. Individuals diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) benefit from quality ABA programs. While there is no cure for ASD, there is evidence that early intervention can make a significant difference in their development.

What Techniques Does ABA Therapy Use?

ABA therapy uses a variety of techniques to help children with ASD. Some of these include:

  • Task Analysis: Breaking down complex skills into manageable steps that can be taught in a step-by-step manner.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Ensuring something the person likes happens after they engage in a target skill or behavior.
  • Behavior Modification: Adjusting environmental factors to support the target behaviors.
  • Discrete Trial Training: Teaching new skills in a controlled environment, using prompts and reinforcement to ensure success.

The Importance of ABCs

ACES - What is ABA

In ABA therapy, target behaviors are any behaviors of interest that we are trying to increase the likelihood or decrease the likelihood of the behavior. This is done by analyzing and changing the antecedents or consequences around the behavior.

  • Antecedent: The antecedent is what occurs directly before the behavior. For example, an antecedent may be the arrival of a particular person, a statement or question, or an item or location.
  • Behavior: The behavior itself is often a response to the antecedent.
  • Consequence: The consequence is what happens immediately following a behavior. Consequences either make it more likely the behavior occurs in the future or less likely the behavior happens in the future.

In order to issue the consequence that will have the intended impact on the behavior, the Behavior Analyst will help determine the function of the behavior, or why the behavior is occurring. Sometimes, it may seem like you're issuing a consequence that should make a behavior less likely to happen, but it has the opposite effect! One example is if a child is trying to get their parents attention by throwing toys at them and a parent spends minutes lecturing them on why we shouldn't throw toys, that could strengthen the whining because they received the attention they were looking for.

What Are the Benefits of ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy has been shown to help improve communication skills, social interactions, adaptive behaviors, and safety skills for children with ASD. ABA uses principles of motivation, so the people receiving the therapy should be motivated to engage because it should be full of things they enjoy doing.

Caregivers can also implement the tools from ABA strategies for their child, which can lead to decreased stress and a calmer and more confident caregiver, resulting in a more supported and successful child.
