If you're a loved one of someone with autism, you know that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to treating this complex disorder. Different individuals respond to different therapies, and what works for one person may not work for another. So it can be tricky to determine what therapy is best for your loved one. One approach that has shown promise in many cases is ABA (applied behavior analysis) therapy. But what is ABA, and who is it appropriate for? ACES takes a closer look below.

Applied Behavioral Analysis

The science of learning and behavior is an ever-evolving field. It helps us understand how individuals' behaviors are affected by their environment, as well as the process by which they learn new things from those environments over time. ABA is the only evidence based treatment for people with autism and can be flexible enough to meet each person’s individual needs with empathy at its core.

Our Mission

We’re on a mission to help people with autism and other developmental disabilities reach their full potential. We know that this journey can feel like an insurmountable obstacle, especially at the beginning or if you’re a parent. Since our founding in 1997, we have been helping children and families across the Western United States using the latest and most widely accepted teaching and therapeutic methodologies.

Is ABA Right For Your Loved One?

There is no one answer to this question as every situation is different, but here are some things to consider when making your decision. It is important to remember that there is no right or wrong choice, just what works best for you and your family. Every person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is unique, and while Aces believes ABA is extremely beneficial, it's important to find the interventions and treatments that work best for them.

How Does ABA Compare to Other Therapies For ASD

The best way for parents of children with ASD to know what will work in each individual's life is by consulting an expert. Therapists have several options available, including:

  • Relationship Development Intervention (RDI): RDI training provides children with lessons on how to think flexibly and engage in social relationships with other people.
  • Sensory Integration and Related Therapies: Although these therapies can help, there is no scientific documentation that sensory therapies are effective in treating the disorder. The goal is to help regulate the child’s reaction to external stimuli.

We hope this article has helped you understand a little more about ABA, who it is appropriate for, and how it compares to other therapies.
