Symptoms of Autism

Autism is a developmental disorder that makes it difficult for an individual to socialize and integrate well into society. The way autism displays itself is different in every person which is why at ACES we cater our ABA therapy plans to each individual. These symptoms can include, but are not limited to, obsessive tendencies, short temper, attachment to routine, exceptional abilities, or intense focus on one thing at a time. If you notice a loved one experiencing any of these things, autism may be the cause.

Genetic Causes

It has been theorized for years that genetics may play a role in a child developing autism. Recently, researchers have discovered that genetics do indeed play a role in autism, but only in about 10% to 20% of cases. There are hundreds of genetic contributors to autism being present in an individual and each person will likely be diagnosed on a different level of the spectrum. There is no cut-and-dry prediction for autism, but genetics do indeed play a role in the presence of autism in a child.

Environmental Causes

While autism will impact 1 in 59 children and genetics play a definite role in an autism diagnosis, there are environmental factors that can result in a child having autism. These environmental factors include fetal exposure to heavy metals, valproic acid or thalidomide, and certain viral infections. Some of these things can result in autism running in the family if there is generational exposure to any of these things.

Other Predictors and Treatment Options

There are other known causes of autism such as being born to older parents, having metabolic issues as an infant, or low birth rate. Some of these other causes can be impacted by genetics and can run in the family. Should you experience any of the symptoms listed above, or are aware of genetic markers in your own life that could result in autism in your child or another loved one, do not worry, there are lots of options to help them with integration. At ACES, we offer customized autism therapy in offices across the US. We understand that each individual is different and tailor our therapy to benefit that person specifically.
