When you have a child with autism in your home, you know that keeping a schedule can be incredibly helpful and assist in keeping them healthy and happy as they grow! However, making big changes, like getting ready to attend school, can be daunting to prepare for. At ACES ABA, our team is dedicated to helping parents, caregivers, and children with autism succeed in daily life by providing compassionate, understanding, and supportive care for individuals with autism. As you prepare for school with your little one, it can be easy to get overwhelmed, so here are some tips on helping your child with autism get ready for school.

Set Routines Designed for Success!

Routine can be immensely helpful in maintaining positive mental health for children with autism. Because of this, the change in routine from at-home activities and education to attending a new place with new people can be intimidating to your child with autism. Help to set them up for success by slowly changing their current routine to fit their soon-to-be school schedule so the change isn’t as daunting once they actually begin attending. For instance, if they normally get up later than would be needed for school, start by getting them up five to ten minutes earlier than their usual time for a week, and continue that until your child is used to getting up on time to get ready for school in the morning.

Meet with School Staff

Of course, ensuring that your child has the support, understanding, and accommodations they need in school is going to be key to their success, as well! Before school starts, set up a meeting with school administrators, teachers, or caregivers to ensure that everyone supporting your child is working as a team to help them get the most out of school and to get a great education.

Tailor Preparation for Your Child

Every child is different, and children with autism deserve tailored experiences, too! If you find that one particular aspect of attending school is more difficult for your child than other aspects, work with the supportive team at ACES ABA to find guidance, care, and support in helping them adjust!

Find Support For Every Family Member

Making a big transition, such as starting school, can be difficult for every family. Whether it’s because your child with autism is experiencing new situations that push them outside of their comfort zone or it’s because you’re seeing your child grow and change is bittersweet, finding support from others who understand can make a world of difference. At ACES ABA, our team is here to help with services designed for your needs!
